Laser Hair Removal
Permanent reduction for the hair that keeps coming back.
MAY 21 2026
Overview
Laser hair removal uses targeted wavelengths of laser energy to damage hair follicles at the root, reducing and ultimately preventing future hair growth in treated areas. A full course of sessions addresses follicles across all growth phases, producing permanent reduction for most patients.
Modern systems are effective across a broad range of skin tones and treat most areas of the face and body. It has been one of the most consistently in-demand cosmetic treatments for more than two decades, for the straightforward reason that it works.
What's going on beneath the skin
Laser energy is absorbed by melanin, the pigment in the hair follicle. When that energy is absorbed, it converts to heat, which travels down the hair shaft to the follicle and damages the follicular tissue responsible for regrowth. The key variable is the contrast between hair color and surrounding skin tone: darker hair against lighter skin absorbs energy most selectively. Newer systems using longer wavelengths work safely on darker skin tones by bypassing surface melanin to target the follicle directly.
Hair grows in three phases: anagen (active growth), catagen (transitional), and telogen (resting). Laser energy is most effective during the anagen phase, when the hair shaft is still connected to the follicle. Because only a portion of follicles are in the anagen phase at any given time, multiple sessions are required to treat the full follicle population in a given area.
Daily & Ongoing Care
After treatment:
- The skin may appear red and feel like mild sunburn for a few hours. A cool compress or soothing product can be applied.
- Avoid heat, direct sun exposure, and vigorous exercise for 24 to 48 hours.
- SPF 30 or higher between sessions reduces the risk of post-treatment pigmentation changes.
Before treatment:
- Shave the treatment area 24 to 48 hours before your appointment. Do not wax, thread, or use depilatory creams in the weeks leading up to treatment, as these remove the follicle the laser needs to target.
- Avoid sun exposure and tanning for four to six weeks before each session.

What to expect
During treatment
Session time varies from 15 minutes for a small area like the upper lip to 60 minutes for a full back or legs. The device passes over the skin in precise sequences, and modern systems use integrated cooling that chills the skin surface before, during, and after each pulse. The sensation is typically described as a rubber band snap. Most patients find the treatment entirely manageable.
After treatment
Hair does not fall out immediately. Over the two to three weeks following treatment, treated hairs shed as the follicle releases them. Reduction becomes visible progressively over the full course of sessions.
Results timeline
Six to eight sessions spaced six to eight weeks apart produce permanent reduction for most patients. After a full course, maintenance sessions once or twice a year address any follicles that have reactivated, though the volume of hair returning is typically a small fraction of the original. Most patients describe the result as effectively permanent.
