Fotona Laser

Two wavelengths. One platform. A broad range of applications.

MAY 26 2026

What's going on beneath the skin

The Er:YAG wavelength is ablative at full power: it removes thin layers of the outer epidermis with high precision, smoothing texture and stimulating surface collagen. In non-ablative mode, the same wavelength resurfaces without removing tissue — generating a wound-healing response and collagen stimulation with less recovery time.

The Nd:YAG wavelength bypasses the epidermis almost entirely. At therapeutic doses, it heats the collagen network in the dermis, triggering immediate contraction and longer-term remodeling. This is the mechanism behind facial tightening treatments and intraoral Fotona protocols, where the laser is used inside the mouth to tighten tissue from within — an approach that addresses lower face laxity without any surface disruption.

Working at multiple depths in the same session is something a single-wavelength laser cannot replicate, and it is the core clinical value of the Fotona platform.

Daily & Ongoing Care

After resurfacing protocols

Redness and mild swelling are expected for two to five days depending on treatment intensity. Keep the skin moisturized, avoid retinoids and acids for one week, and apply SPF daily. Avoid direct sun and heat during recovery. Ablative protocols require strict post-care compliance to minimize the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation.

After tightening and non-ablative protocols

Recovery is minimal. Some mild redness and warmth may persist for a few hours. Normal skincare can resume the following day.

Before treatment

Inform your provider of any history of cold sores, active skin infections, or recent sun exposure. Discontinue tanning and retinoids two weeks before ablative sessions. Arrive with clean, makeup-free skin.

Ongoing

Tightening results develop over three to six months as collagen remodels. Most patients benefit from an initial series of two to four treatments with annual maintenance. Resurfacing protocols are designed by the provider based on the concern and depth being addressed.

What to expect

During treatment

Session length varies by protocol — from 30 minutes for a targeted vascular treatment to 60 to 90 minutes for a full Fotona 4D facial. Topical numbing is used for ablative and higher-energy settings. The sensation depends on the delivery mode: ablative passes produce a snapping heat sensation, while tightening protocols feel warm but are typically well tolerated.

After treatment

Ablative protocols produce several days of visible redness and some flaking as the skin heals. Non-ablative and tightening protocols have minimal visible recovery. In both cases, treat the skin gently and avoid unnecessary heat and pressure in the days following treatment.

Results timeline

Non-ablative tightening results develop gradually over three to six months. Surface resurfacing improvements become visible as the skin heals, with continued improvement as new collagen matures. Patients undergoing the Fotona 4D protocol typically notice progressive change across a series, with results stabilizing at three to six months.
