Overview
CO2 laser resurfacing uses targeted infrared light to remove damaged outer layers of skin and stimulate collagen production in the tissue beneath. It is one of the most effective treatments available for deep wrinkles, acne scarring, sun damage, and significant texture irregularities, with results that can last for years.
What's going on beneath the skin
Years of sun exposure, repeated facial movement, and the natural slowing of collagen production leave visible marks on the skin. Deep lines set in, scars from acne or injury persist, and the surface becomes uneven in tone and texture. These are changes that sit below what gentler treatments can reach.
CO2 laser resurfacing works by delivering infrared light that is absorbed by the water in skin cells. This vaporises the damaged outer layer in a controlled way, while simultaneously heating the tissue beneath to stimulate new collagen and elastin production. As the skin heals, a fresh surface replaces the old one. The depth and density of treatment can be calibrated precisely, allowing your provider to match the approach to your specific concerns and skin type.
Daily & Ongoing Care
At-home care:
- SPF 30 or higher daily once healing begins. The new skin is highly vulnerable to UV damage.
- Thick, fragrance-free healing ointment keeps the surface moist and supports healing in the first week
- Gentle cleanser, twice daily. Use cool water. Pat dry carefully.
- Retinoids and active ingredients can be reintroduced around 6 weeks post-treatment, as directed by your provider
Before treatment:
- Avoid tanning and sun exposure for 4 weeks before treatment
- If you have a history of cold sores, discuss antiviral medication with your provider before treatment
- Stop smoking for at least 2 weeks before and after. Smoking delays skin healing.
After treatment:
- Do not pick or scratch crusting skin. This is the most common cause of scarring.
- Avoid all other facial treatments until your provider clears you
- Darker skin tones carry a higher risk of pigmentation changes. Discuss this with your provider at consultation.

What to expect
During treatment
A topical numbing agent is applied beforehand. Oral sedation or local anaesthetic blocks may be used for more intensive treatments. Most patients describe a warm, prickly sensation. Sessions run 30 to 90 minutes. A cooling ointment is applied immediately after and detailed aftercare instructions are provided before you leave.
After treatment
Days 1 to 3 bring redness, swelling, and a raw sensation similar to a severe sunburn. The skin may ooze slightly and form a bronzed crust as the outer layer dries and sheds. By day 5, most patients are comfortable on video calls. Makeup is typically possible by the end of week one. Full healing takes around 2 weeks.
Results timeline
Visible improvement in texture, tone, and scarring is apparent once the skin has healed. Collagen production continues building beneath the surface for up to 6 months. Results from a well-performed session can last for several years with proper sun protection and skincare maintenance.
