Broadband Light Therapy (BBL)
Light calibrated to what time and sun have left behind.
MAY 21 2026
Overview
Broadband Light Therapy (BBL) delivers precisely calibrated pulses of broad-spectrum light to targeted skin cells. It treats pigmentation, vascular irregularities, and the visible effects of photoaging by heating the upper layers of skin to stimulate collagen production and cell renewal, without disrupting the skin surface or requiring significant downtime.
For patients dealing with accumulated sun damage, uneven tone, persistent redness, or the kind of dullness that builds over years, BBL is one of the most versatile non-invasive options available. It can address multiple concerns in a single session and works across a range of skin types.
What's going on beneath the skin
The light pulses delivered during a BBL treatment are absorbed by specific chromophores in the skin: melanin in pigmented lesions and oxyhemoglobin in blood vessels. When these chromophores absorb the light energy, it converts to heat. That heat breaks down unwanted pigment and collapses small blood vessels, while simultaneously stimulating the dermal fibroblasts responsible for collagen production.
The depth and wavelength of each pulse can be tuned to address different concerns, which is what makes BBL useful across such a wide range of skin issues. Skin that has been chronically sun-exposed tends to show the most visible improvement over a course of treatments, as the cumulative pigment and vascular damage responds well to repeated, calibrated light exposure.
Daily & Ongoing Care
After treatment:
- SPF 30 or higher daily. The skin's UV sensitivity increases following BBL, and protecting the new skin is essential to maintaining results.
- Pigmented spots often darken in the days after treatment before shedding naturally. This is a normal part of the process, not a side effect.
- Avoid retinoids and exfoliating acids for one week post-treatment.
Before treatment:
- Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for four to six weeks before each session.
- Arrive with clean, product-free skin and inform your provider of any recent retinoid, acid, or photosensitizing medication use.

What to expect
During treatment
Sessions run 30 to 60 minutes depending on the area being treated. A cooling gel is applied and the provider passes a light-emitting handpiece over the skin in systematic passes. Most patients feel a mild snapping sensation with each pulse. Discomfort is generally minimal.
After treatment
Skin may be mildly flushed and warm for a few hours. There is no wound, no peeling, and no significant downtime. Makeup can generally be applied the same day. Pigmented spots typically darken within a day or two before shedding over the following week.
Results timeline
Clarity and tone improvement becomes visible within one to two weeks of the first session. Results accumulate meaningfully over a full course. Four treatments per year is the standard maintenance cadence, with benefits building progressively over each session.
