Belkyra/Kybella

Belkyra is an injectable treatment that uses deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule that aids fat breakdown, to permanently destroy fat cells beneath the chin. Once destroyed, treated fat cells cannot store or accumulate fat again, making results long-lasting without the need for repeat treatment after the initial series.

Fat beneath the chin is largely determined by genetics and body composition. It often persists even with a healthy weight and lifestyle, because the distribution and number of fat cells in this area is set relatively early in life.

Deoxycholic acid is a substance the body produces naturally to help break down dietary fat. When injected directly into submental fat, it disrupts the membranes of fat cells, causing them to rupture. The body then gradually clears the debris over the following weeks. Because the fat cells themselves are destroyed rather than simply shrunk, the result is permanent. Treated cells cannot regenerate or accumulate fat again.

At-home care:

• Stay well hydrated to support the body's natural clearance of fat cells
• Maintain a stable weight. Significant weight gain after treatment can cause new fat cells to form in the area.
• SPF 30 or higher daily on the treated area once healed
• Gentle, non-irritating skincare products around the chin and neck

Before treatment:

• Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements for 1 week before to reduce bruising
• Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before treatment

After treatment:

• Do not touch or massage the treated area for at least 24 hours
• Apply cold compresses to reduce swelling during the first 24 hours
• Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and extreme heat for 24 to 48 hours
• Sleep with your head elevated on the first night

During treatment

The treatment area is marked with a grid to guide precise injection placement. A numbing agent or ice pack is applied beforehand. Multiple small injections are made beneath the chin in a session of 20 to 30 minutes. A mild burning or tingling sensation is common and resolves shortly after.

After treatment

Significant swelling beneath the chin is expected for 3 to 5 days and is a sign the treatment is working. Residual swelling, bruising, numbness, or soreness may persist for up to 10 to 14 days. Avoid touching or massaging the area. Most patients return to normal activities immediately.

Results timeline

Changes become visible from 4 to 6 weeks after each session as the body clears destroyed fat cells. Most patients require 2 to 3 sessions for full results. Once the series is complete, results are permanent. Repeat treatment is not normally required.
